Before introducing how to grind cermet cutter, I must mention something to remind all the cutting tool manufacturer:
1. Don't request the grinding wheel too high
During the years with the cooperation of our cutting tool manufacturers, the hardest problem we have faced most is not the retention of the wheel but the high request of cutting tool manufacturers. Most of the new manufacturers who are newer of producing cermet cutter want to grind the cermet cutter as the grinding method of Tungsten cutter.
So before you want to produce cermet cutter, you need to downgrade the request of grinding wheel. We have faced a situation that the manufacturer only use the sharp point to grind the cutter because the Tungsten cutter grinding like this.
2. Why we can grind cermet cutter?
The manufacturers producing metal ceramic cutting tools often choose metal and resin bonded grinding wheels. However, these two types of grinding wheels do not have automatic chip removal capabilities. Consequently, after grinding 2 to 3 milling cutters, these wheels require reconditioning.
Therefore, a grinding wheel that is capable of automatic chip removal, maintains high sharpness, and possesses a suitable level of hardness and softness is crucial. Our grinding wheels achieve this balanced level of hardness, softness, exceptional sharpness, and possess the ability for automatic chip removal, which is why we are capable of grinding metal ceramics.
So how to grind the cermet cutter?
During the grinding process of metal ceramics, due to their high brittleness, chipping and breaking might occur. Therefore, if you aim to finish grinding such tools with one wheel, you'll need to reduce the feed rate and the grinding wheel's rotational speed.
Hence, in using our grinding wheel, we recommend a two-cut approach: the first cut involves high speed and high feed rate to create an initial cut with a remaining margin, resulting in numerous chips on the tool; the second cut involves lowering the rotational speed and reducing the feed rate to polish the final groove, achieving the desired smoothness and finish.
If you follow the grinding with our suggestions, you will grind the cermet well.
